ALERT: Windows 10 update bug could ruin your SSD — What you should know now

Microsoft is moving to fix an update that reportedly introduced a bug that could affect the lifespan of solid state drives (SSDs).

Bug-tracking site BleepingComputer reported that the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, aka version 2004, has caused many problems, including one that impacts the ‘Defragment and Optimize Drives’ tool in the Windows operating system. The bug prevents Windows 10 version 2004 from recording the last time an SSD was defragmented and optimized correctly.

Since people tend to forget to Defrag and Optimize their drives manually, Windows 10 is set to carry out this task automatically.

As the tool doesn’t record the defragmentations, it can end up unnecessarily defragging an SSD every time the drive gets rebooted, way more often than it should. Over time, this could result in slowly damaging the longevity of your SSD.

Defragmentation pulls together related fragments of data and packs them closely together to increase speed of access. However, excessive read and writes performed by defragmentation can risk the lifespan of an SSD.

Since SSDs were introduced, there’s been disagreement on how frequently you should defrag your drives. While defragging is key to quicker access to data on mechanical spinning drives, many experts believe there’s no benefit to defragging an SSD.

A fix is coming

The Windows 10 Build 19042.487 (20H2) update currently being rolled out to members of the Windows Insider program, promises to fix the bug.

In the meantime, Clarkstown Computer recommends turning off automatic defragging to prevent damaging the SSDs on your Windows 10 computer. Get a PC Repair Quote Now
